Using Reflections to Create Unique Portraits
Reflections can add a captivating layer of creativity to your portrait photography.
Whether it's through mirrors, water, or glass, reflections offer a way to frame your subject in a more dynamic and artistic manner.
By incorporating reflections, you can create depth, symmetry, or even a surreal, dreamlike effect, elevating the standard portrait into something more engaging and visually striking.
Mirrors are one of the easiest tools for this technique.
Photographer: Filippova Nadezhda
Positioning a mirror creatively allows you to capture multiple angles of your subject or create a sense of duality in the shot.
Glass windows or water surfaces, on the other hand, can introduce subtle reflections that blend the environment with your subject, producing a unique fusion of both.
Photographer: Fanny Anahi Paz
You can experiment with placing subjects behind glass, catching the reflection of a busy street or a calm landscape, adding layers to the image.
Water reflections, especially after rain, can add texture and mood, enhancing the atmosphere of a scene.
Playing with reflective surfaces also allows you to explore new perspectives, creating unexpected and abstract visuals that capture the viewer’s attention.

Mastering this technique within the portrait niche sets your work apart, giving your clients an image that feels both personal and artistic.
Experiment with different reflective surfaces and angles to create portraits that stand out, telling a story through more than just the subject’s face.
Hope this helps, it helped me just writing it, enjoy.
